Busy day

Headed to Walmart first thing this morning to get another apple tree to replace one that died two years ago. Got a Dwarf Gala Apple tree for $20 and planted it next to out existing apple tree.

Then I built the third of four chicken wire enclosures, built and erected the third conduit trellis and attached the netting to the first trellis. I also put the broccoli and cauliflower outside all day to prepare them for planting on Friday. That was about enough for one day.

Here's the first pea sprout poking through the soil.

EDIT (4/17/09): Apparently, this photo is not of a pea sprout, but of some sort of weed. I only realized after the REAL peas began to sprout. I yanked out the weeds (3 of them).

  1. That's nice you got a dwarf apple tree...when it matures you'll still be able to reach the apples. When I'm ready to plant an apple tree I will also plant a dwarf one. Too many projects this spring already...will have to wait till next year.

  2. Is that your only apple tree? In order to get apples you need two that bloom at the same time, so they can pollinate each other. I don't think apple trees can self-pollinate. Going on the third year for me and no apples yet! I have a McIntosh and Fuji and according to this chart they bloom at the same time, but that's not how it happens for me. http://www.fruit-tree.com/applepollen.html
If you have a neighbor with an apple tree that blooms when yours does, you might be alright

  3. We have another apple tree, right next to the new one. When we moved in 2 1/2 years ago, there was another apple tree and some other fruit tree (neighbor thinks plums) where the new one is, but they promptly died. Our neighbors, two doors down, have apple trees, too, so hopefully we'll be okay.
